NFT Vote Dictates Crawley Town’s New Signing

In a first-of-its kind effort, Crawley Town, which is the professional English football team that was recently acquired by Web3 outfit WAGMI United, has signed a new player based on the results of a vote that was put forward to NFT holders.

The vote, which asked fans what type of player the club should next recruit, took place last month on June 15th via a temporary Discord chat. Those who hold one of the 10,000 WAGMI United NFTs, as well as the almost 1,000 season ticket holders, were invited to partake in the vote, with the outcome being revealed last week when the club signed 20-year-old and former Millwall midfielder Jayden Davis on a free transfer. Through reading between the lines, this meant that the result of the vote was in favour of signing a young player that could be of value to the club for many years to come.

In speaking on how important it is to start offering fans a stake in club decisions, especially as English football continues to become more and more out of touch with its roots due to the international flows of money it receives, Crawley Town co-owner and former ESPN gambling analyst Preston Johnson had this to say:

“A lot of NFT projects are just speculation with no real tangible spine, no real true story. Having a football club to root for every week? That’s a spine that people attach themselves to. If we can bring that to this crypto audience, especially if we’re able to actually achieve promotion and move up the ranks of the English football league, then it’s an even bigger story people all around the world can be part of”.

In addition to its unique voting rights, the WAGMI United NFT collection also grants holders with opportunities to receive alternate team jerseys, free Adidas merchandise, and exclusive physical and virtual events. At the time of writing, there are 1,919 of the 10,000 still available to be minted, however each will set you back a relatively hefty 0.35 ETH (approximately $600).
